Infrastructure Development

The Southern Africa region is faced with a challenge of inadequate infrastructure to become globally competitive. With the exception of South Africa which has first world infrastructure, much of the region has massive backlogs with regard to infrastructure which is key to propelling the competitiveness of the region. The region is not coping with current infrastructure requirements, and therefore requires an innovative approach in order to respond positively to the greater challenges of a more complicated future, especially when compounded by rising competition brought about by increasing globalisation.

Kawaida Collaborative has focused on the transport infrastructure which is very key to unlocking the economic potential of the region. As the saying goes that…”It takes a good transport infrastructure to make the economy a success as goods are easily moved from one trade location to another”. This motivates our drive to facilitate and promote investment in this sector of the regional economy. We have partnered with some of the world’s leading engineering services and technology companies which provides access to global expertise and knowledge covering a wide range of technical and engineering fields.

Road Infrastructure

Productivity in every sector is affected by the quality and performance of the road system. Roads and motorways are essential to ensure mobility of people and goods, and new road infrastructure is needed on an ongoing basis. More importantly, existing roads need refurbishment or upgrading.

There is currently considerable capacity on most of the road network in the region with projections indicating the need for widening, construction of bypasses for major cities, passing lanes in hilly regions and more efficient border posts. Missing links have to be paved in areas where the network is still gravel or earth.

We offer a range of services in road and motorway engineering:

  • Road and motorway engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Structural engineering
  • Project management
  • Construction management and monitoring

Rail Infrastructure

Construction and upgrading of railway infrastructure has rapidly increased all over the world. A sustainable transport system is essential for a well-functioning society. Increased urbanisation and road congestion make railways a strong alternative to road transport for people and freight.

Southern Africa’s rail infrastructure is not functional due to a number of factors which include lack of maintenance and investment, loss of volumes and income as result of road transport deregulation. As a result, most of the railways are very run‐down and require substantial rehabilitation of both infrastructure and rolling stock. The current situation has resulted in the regional railway systems to fall below the required global standards of sustainable rail operations.

Through our strategic alliances and partners we at Kawaida Collaborative offer professional consultancy services in the railway and other public sector transport; including a complete range of rail-based systems, from high-speed railways to urban transport systems, such as metro and light rail. Our technical expertise in the rail consultancy comprises permanent way, traction power, and overhead catenaries system, interlocking systems, signalling, traffic management, telecoms and rolling stock.

We combine this expertise with all of our other services – allowing us to deliver fully integrated transport solutions. With extensive expertise in railway and urban transport services, we offer planning, design, operational, and commissioning services. We cover the whole project cycle from inception to ex-post evaluation and maintain a strong focus on the customer’s needs and expectations through all stages of the project  and ensure proper risk management at all times.

Some of our services but not limited to:

  • Master planning and feasibility studies
  • System design and engineering
  • Tendering, evaluation, and contracting
  • Implementation of rail solutions
  • Project and construction management
  • Environment, HSE, and sustainability

Infrastructure Asset Management

This service focuses on Asset Management of public infrastructure which is all about keeping roads, bridges, tunnels, ports, and other infrastructure in the best condition. It is essential to have a safe and reliable infrastructure system. Through our strategic partners we have been recognised with our ability to facilitate this service at the lowest possible life cycle cost of course in close cooperation with our customers.

We aspire to be the regional market leader in asset management for roads and bridges – and experts in areas related to condition survey, rehabilitation and maintenance planning. Our approach includes performing all the necessary assessments and work according to local geography and climate. We know what it takes to keep roads, bridges, tunnels, port structures, and other civil works in top condition.

All outdoor structures deteriorate due to shifting environmental and mechanical conditions. We therefore continuously work on developing new models, survey technologies, and effective, long-lasting procedures and methods for repairs or strengthening of damaged structures. This includes procedures for maintenance and repairs complete- or partial replacement, stabilisation of the deterioration condition, or a reduction of the current deterioration speed of the structure.

Our services apply to every phase of a structure’s life cycle and include the following:

  • Routine inspections, special inspections and measurements
  • Materials technology
  • Monitoring and management systems
  • Life cycle cost and risk analysis
  • Rehabilitation programming, design and supervision
